The Vagina Monologues

March 8th 2011, 7pm, OISE Auditorium, 252 Bloor St. West

360 Productions and the Centre for Women's Studies in Education (CWSE) are staging a production of The Vagina Monologues.

This multiple-award winning play by Eve Ensler is given a fresh new twist by Loretta Chen, PhD, award-winning director of the internationally acclaimed 251 and the Asian Premiere of the Broadway classic Victor/Victoria. It is produced by Telly Award recipient and Hollywood fight choreographer, Jennifer Phillips (Salt, Eclipse). Boasting a stellar cast of 33 diverse, talented, and dynamic women, The Vagina Monologues is a powerful collection of anecdotes celebrating all things feminine - part therapy, part informative, wholly electrifying! Leave your inhibitions at the door as you laugh with the women recollecting their first love, virgin sexual encounter and horror stories of their first period! Or, weep and be livid with them as they share painful childhood experiences, traumas of abuse and stories of sexual violation. Finally, revel in awe and wonder as we pay tribute to our mothers - the single most important woman in our lives. Whether you are a Man from Mars or Woman from Venus, join us in this Earth-shattering, no-holds barred theatrical experience! So make this your mandatory night out as we celebrate all things wild, wonderful and women!

Tickets are $15 and are available in advance at the CWSE, 252 Bloor St. West, in person Monday through Thursday, 12pm to 3pm. Or get your ticket at the door, 6-6:45pm the day of.

The Raging Grannies, Toronto Chapter

March 9th 2011, 6.00-8.00pm, Lash Miller Building, Room 59, Southwest corner of St. George Street at Willcocks Street

In Honour of International Women’s Day, The Raging Grannies are at the Women and Gender Studies Institute.

Raging Grannies began in the winter of ’86-’87. The number of actual groups (or “gaggles”, as we are called) has grown and spread, until there are now over 60 world-wide. The first Grannies started their work in Victoria B.C., focused on shipments of arms and radioactive materials. Other issues we “rage”, sing, and engage in street theatre about include peace and social justice, Native rights, environment and political incompetence and corruption. I say “include” because Granny gaggles are always poring over the news and responding to events as they occur. There are no requirements for Granny membership except to identify as female and have attitude. Lack of musical talent is no barrier, and we are always recruiting. Perhaps by wearing funny hats and outfits we sometimes look a bit silly, which is a good thing. While standing with other protesters, we often provide a bit of comic relief, which can help to ease tensions, while representing the wisdom that at least a few of us have acquired from a lifetime of observing the state of the world. In the past, Grannies have joined in Greenpeace protests, attempted to join the military “so young people won’t have to go to war” and even been arrested. We have been known to “crash” events that we are not invited to, especially if those events should be public, but aren’t. We encourage others to stand by their values and principles by so obviously, nay, blatantly, doing so ourselves.
